Goog day all!

Is Netsight able (or any other tool) to discover unconfigured / configured Enterasys switchs on a network (like MAC search, ...) ?

Thanks in advance

You can "discover" that a switch or network device exists by reading several tables on other switches or routers like...

Spanning tree
LACP
CDP
Node/Alias table (assuming it's Enterasys)

But, you won't be able to manage the network device unless it has an IP address with the correct SNMP settings.

Hello David

You can use lldp protocol and with the command "show neighbors" you can see the devices.

Hi David,

You can try using Compass from within NetSight Console. This will 'scan'
the devices that you currently have modeled to try and determine what is
living on a port.

1. Select the All Devices folder.
2. Change to the Compass tab.
3. Leave the Search Type as Auto.
4. Enter the MAC if you know that into the Search Parameters Address field.

Make sure that the Results Filter is set for layer 2/3/4 and
CDP/Backplane/Host Data Ports as this will display the most results.

If you only want to look on a specific device then you can drill down and
select only that device in the Device Tree and perform the same operation.

NOTE that if you leave the Search Parameters Address field blank it will
pull back all the information that the switch knows about.

Hello David

You can use lldp protocol and with the command "show neighbors" you can see the devices.

By the SNMP method i think i should have IP configured on all devices, right?

Hi David,

You can try using Compass from within NetSight Console. This will 'scan' the devices that you currently have modeled to try and determine what is living on a port.

1. Select the All Devices folder.
2. Change to the Compass tab.
3. Leave the Search Type as Auto.
4. Enter the MAC if you know that into the Search Parameters Address field.

Make sure that the Results Filter is set for layer 2/3/4 and CDP/Backplane/Host Data Ports as this will display the most results.

If you only want to look on a specific device then you can drill down and select only that device in the Device Tree and perform the same operation.

NOTE that if you leave the Search Parameters Address field blank it will pull back all the information that the switch knows about.

David et al:

You can never have enough tools especially enough tools to find things on your network.

There are many great things about Netsight for managing Enterasys and non-Enterasys networks. Compass is a wonderful tool. Let me suggest there are several things that will increase the success of using this tool.

See the attached JPG file (has the word "Options" in the file name). This shows the open "Options" button. These are all the things you can search on in a Compass search. Note that in my standard search on our network, we generally only look for three different SNMP mibs when doing a search. There are many things you can search for and you can change this list of options to improve you search results. We do this all the time. Note also the left column. When you add a device to Netsight there are many things that get recorded about that device. When you set up a switch or wap you should be setting up something in the location field. That is because Netsight will automatically record this information and it will show up in searches when you "go to" a device. You can also search on fewer devices to make searches go faster. There are all sorts of things that can be done with searches. This search goes out and checks all the switches that are in Netsight. Even if I used only the three SNMP mibs you see in this picture, to check all 4000+ devices in my Netsight takes about three minutes. This is not bad if you try comparing that to one person stepping through arp tables. We have used this for years with much success.

However, there is an even better way to do this and use even more data that is in Netsight. We call it the Networking Information Tool - NIT.

The wealth of information that is in Netsight especially as you have more components of it install is very, very large. At UNC we have a large NAC deployment. With a number of tools we have from Enterasys, we have written several web pages that are key services that save our users huge amounts of time and have reduced drastically reduced the number of tickets we get to the networking group. See the JPG file with the name "NIT" in it. This is a lookup that can be done with a mac address or an IP address (about 90% success rate) that is seconds can give back much information about an existing device on the network: If you put in IP address it gives you mac address or vice versa. It also gives you ping status, registered IP hostname, switch ip, switch port, port description, switch type, switch location, date & time last seen on the network, default vlan, NAC policy of the device, Security Domain, Security Profile and Security Group Membership. This lookup takes seconds...yes seconds. It is looking at many things in Netsight as well as a few sources outside of Netsight. One of the reasons it is so fast is that it is using the current data in Netsight NAC. We give access to over 400 support staff in our central group and in departments throughout campus. Many tickets do not have to come to us because campus support staff have this tool to find things in our large network. When we do get tickets now, much of the time this "NIT" information is already in the ticket and we have one less step to do to work on a problem. Programming this is not trivial but it is doable with several tool sets and data points you can get from Enterasys.

Let us know if you have questions.

re. Device Locations, putting a forward slash in the Location string will
Group By each sub-string - effectively creating a folders hierarchy.
So for example a Location of "UK/London/WhitSt/2nd Floor" will give you a
folder hierarchy with UK as the top level, London as the next level etc
which makes it easier to target your searches.

You can never have enough tools especially enough tools to find things on
your network.****
** **
There are many great things about Netsight for managing Enterasys and
non-Enterasys networks. Compass is a wonderful tool. Let me suggest there
are several things that will increase the success of using this tool.****
** **
See the attached JPG file (has the word “Options” in the file name). This
shows the open “Options” button. These are all the things you can search
on in a Compass search. Note that in my standard search on our network, we
generally only look for three different SNMP mibs when doing a search.
There are many things you can search for and you can change this list of
options to improve you search results. We do this all the time. Note also
the left column. When you add a device to Netsight there are many things
that get recorded about that device. When you set up a switch or wap you
should be setting up something in the location field. That is because
Netsight will automatically record this information and it will show up in
searches when you “go to” a device. You can also search on fewer devices
to make searches go faster. There are all sorts of things that can be done
with searches. This search goes out and checks all the switches that are
in Netsight. Even if I used only the three SNMP mibs you see in this
picture, to check all 4000+ devices in my Netsight takes about three
minutes. This is not bad if you try comparing that to one person stepping
through arp tables. We have used this for years with much success.****
** **
However, there is an even better way to do this and use even more data
that is in Netsight. We call it the Networking Information Tool – NIT.***
*
** **
The wealth of information that is in Netsight especially as you have more
components of it install is very, very large. At UNC we have a large NAC
deployment. With a number of tools we have from Enterasys, we have written
several web pages that are key services that save our users huge amounts of
time and have reduced drastically reduced the number of tickets we get to
the networking group. See the JPG file with the name “NIT” in it. This is
a lookup that can be done with a mac address or an IP address (about 90%
success rate) that is seconds can give back much information about an
existing device on the network: If you put in IP address it gives you mac
address or vice versa. It also gives you ping status, registered IP
hostname, switch ip, switch port, port description, switch type, switch
location, date & time last seen on the network, default vlan, NAC policy of
the device, Security Domain, Security Profile and Security Group
Membership. This lookup takes seconds…yes seconds. It is looking at many
things in Netsight as well as a few sources outside of Netsight. One of
the reasons it is so fast is that it is using the current data in Netsight
NAC. We give access to over 400 support staff in our central group and in
departments throughout campus. Many tickets do not have to come to us
because campus support staff have this tool to find things in our large
network. When we do get tickets now, much of the time this “NIT”
information is already in the ticket and we have one less step to do to
work on a problem. Programming this is not trivial but it is doable with
several tool sets and data points you can get from Enterasys. ****

Hi David,****
** **
You can try using Compass from within NetSight Console. This will 'scan'
the devices that you currently have modeled to try and determine what is
living on a port.****
** **
1. Select the All Devices folder.****
2. Change to the Compass tab.****
3. Leave the Search Type as Auto.****
4. Enter the MAC if you know that into the Search Parameters Address
field.****
** **
Make sure that the Results Filter is set for layer 2/3/4 and
CDP/Backplane/Host Data Ports as this will display the most results.****
** **
If you only want to look on a specific device then you can drill down and
select only that device in the Device Tree and perform the same operation.
****
** **
NOTE that if you leave the Search Parameters Address field blank it will
pull back all the information that the switch knows about.****

My problem is to find equipment which IP address is unknown, especially
devices without IP (that’s why I’m asking something like MAC scanner).****
By the SNMP method i think i should have IP configured on all devices,
right?****

Hi David, you can find unconfigured Enterasys devices with the public snmp
community. And not only Enterasys devices.****
****
For configured you need to put the correct SNMP settings to discover.****
