Discussion:
Best AP/Radio config for high client/AP density?

I have an open GTAC case and am waiting for the standard Enterasys recommendations, but I'm curious what others have seen in the real world. We have had reports of client connection issues at one school with a heavy Mac deployment in a group of adjacent classrooms.
Controller - C5110-2 firmware 8.31.03.0011
APs - 3610 - 1 per classroom
Clients - MacAir OS X 10.8.4 (google search show other folks having WiFi issues if there is heavy channel interference), 33 per classroom.
SSIDs - 2 deployed, one hidden, both using NAC/RADIUS for authentication
Topology is ***@AP for these authenticated clients

I've tried to push the config recommended from the help pages, but for some reason bulk AP radio configs are not sticking (I changed several of the ones listed below but looking at the current config they are not active). I did enable DCS in active mode and will be onsite to monitor today - current radio configs are:

Radio 1:
Admin Mode: On
Radio Mode: a/n
Channel Width: Auto
Guard Interval: Short
ATPC: Enabled
Max Tx Power: 24 dbm

Radio 2:

Max Tx Power: 24 dbm
Min Tx Power: 8 dbm
Auto Tx Power Ctrl Adj: 0 dbm

I could go back and set them based on the 'High Throughput' settings list from the controller online help, but I don't want ot just randomly change settings without further logging or the recommendations from GTAC.

Thanks for any info!

Kendt-

We have a "strongly encouraged" (we are a public school district) BYOD program in grades 6-12 using 2 x C4110's running 8.11.11.0003, 3610 APs, and NAC.

To get the AP Multi-edit settings to stick you have to always set Admin Mode, Radio Mode, and Antenna Selection. I think there was some talk about changing this but I still have to set these three settings for my settings to stick. I am still on 8.11.11.003.

Do not leave ATPC Enabled and Auto Channel in Active Mode. You should set these once, let the APs figure everything out for an hour, then disable ATPC and set Dynamic Channel to Monitor. You do not want your APs switching channels and changing power settings all day long. This will drive clients crazy. I set my minimum transfer rate to 24Mbps. I have an AP in every "teaching space" and the clients should all connect at that rate and not decide to jump on some distant AP or not roam when a kid switches class.

Also, I only have Legacy, WMM, and 802.11e enabled in WLAN Services > VNS Name. I also have Flexible Client Access Enabled and set to Mostly Airtime.

I just looked and it seems that 6 MB/s is the lowest setting.

I think this setting should be set based on your environment. I have APs in every "teaching space" like classrooms, gyms, offices, halls, etc.. When I had this setting to low I found clients did not always roam when a student switched classes or sometimes they would associate to horrible APs. I found that 24Mbps is the sweet spot for my environment.

Cheers,

I will be following this thread because we have had user complaints of poor service too, even though the signal strength seems to be OK. We don't usually have your user/AP density though. For the most part we are 3620, with some 3710. The other difference is that we specify 40MHz channel-width on radio-1 (5GHz) and 20MHz width on the 2.4GHz band. Our theory is that allowing a wide channel-width on the congested 2.4GHz band may create interference and we are willing to live with the lower bandwidth there for 2.4GHz "n".

One thing that I have noticed in poking around is that the AP's seem to do a poor job of auto channel selection. While the primary channel (on the 40MHz wide radio-1) may be fine, in a significant number of cases the second "bonded" channel seems to have a problem (listed as "down" in the AP Inventory Report). When I manually locate a different primary channel that does successfully bond with its secondary, then everything seems fine, and these changes even "stick" between reboots.

Our other observation is that an AP reboot seems to at least temporarily clear our problems, although doing that regularly is a pain. It is not clear to me if the channel-bonding issue is really "the answer", and we are still groping around on this.

I would be interested in what GTAC comes back with, if you wouldn't mind sending to the list. We are having the exact same issue with MAC users.

Subject: [enterasys] Best AP/Radio config for high client/AP density?

I have an open GTAC case and am waiting for the standard Enterasys recommendations, but I'm curious what others have seen in the real world. We have had reports of client connection issues at one school with a heavy Mac deployment in a group of adjacent classrooms.
Controller - C5110-2 firmware 8.31.03.0011 APs - 3610 - 1 per classroom Clients - MacAir OS X 10.8.4 (google search show other folks having WiFi issues if there is heavy channel interference), 33 per classroom.
SSIDs - 2 deployed, one hidden, both using NAC/RADIUS for authentication Topology is ***@AP for these authenticated clients

Min Tx Power: 8 dbm

Radio 2:

I could go back and set them based on the 'High Throughput' settings list from the controller online help, but I don't want ot just randomly change settings without further logging or the recommendations from GTAC.

Thanks for any info!

Ho Eklund,
Since most of your customers are using Mac OS , its a client with both A/n and G/N radio .
Try to do few things :
1. Use Radio Preference group ( under AP window there is Load group , create few groups - e.g one per floor let say) . It will push muximum number of people to use cleaner A/N
2. Disable DCS , or put it in monitor mode.
3. On 2.4 Radio choose G/N instead of B/G/N , unless you know of having B-only clients.
4. You can try to enable MPDU aggregation on both radios.

33 clients per AP is not a big number.

Regards
Yury

I have around 20 students that have 2013 MBA devices running 10.8.4. I have not seen a 2013 MBA device play nice on my 802.1x, PEAP, MS-CHAPv2 network. There are plenty of other MBA/MBP devices running 10.8.4 that do not exhibit the same behavior. There are a few reports on the Apple Discussion Forums.

Here is one of them:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5234129?start=0&tstart=0

I do not own a MBA and can not test 10.8.5. There is no mention of any 802.1x fixes in the release notes. I have encouraged my building techs to find a student that will let us update their device (and not hold us liable).

For now, we have recommended all of our 2013 MBA students use our captive portal SSID and stay away from our straight 802.1x SSID.

My 2013 MBA has occasionally had similar issue -- where 802.1x absolutely
will not connect after coming out of sleep, and a reboot will not fix it.
Even a single connection attempt makes the wifi adapter start acting wonky
(very scientific term). In that case, resetting the PRAM 4-5x in a row
does the trick and keeps it going through many sleep/wake transitions.
